Participants Needed For Rotary Speech Contest

Last updated on Tuesday, February 14, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County high school students are encouraged to compete for cash prizes in an upcoming Rotary Club contest.

Rotary's District 6580 Speech Contest calls for students to prepare a 4-6 minute speech on the Four-Way Test and its application to life, leadership and service to others.

The speeches are scheduled to be presented to a panel of judges, Feb. 21, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Lawrence County Museum.

The winner earns the right to represent the Bedford Rotary Club at the District 6580 Centennial Speech Contest, slated for March 3 in Vincennes.

The winner will also present the speech to the local club at one of its upcoming meetings. District 6580 offers prizes of $500, $300 and $200 to the top three winners. District winners will get the opportunity to address Rotary members at the 2012 District Conference in French Lick on April 28.

The Four-Way Test dates back to the 1930s and was conceived by Herbert J. Taylor, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago and a prominent Windy City businessman. Faced with stern competition from other firms, Taylor drafted a code of ethics for his company to follow.

Basically, it dictated the consideration of four questions before establishing any policy or action plan. Is it truthful? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? And, will it be beneficial to all concerned? This is what the Rotary Club promotes in providing service to others, promoting integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Any student wishing to compete should contact Rowena Cross-Najafi at (812) 606-1758 or rcross11@msn.com.
