(OOLITIC) - An Oolitic man was arrested after he bought pseudoephedrine and was selling the cold medication to people who make meth.
That practice is called smurfing, according to Oolitic Deputy Town Marshal Bill Allen.
31-year-old Troy George was charged with unlawful selling of a precursor, a Class D felony.
Allen says he discovered what George was doing after reviewing logbooks that require people who purchase drugs that contain ephedrine or pseudoephedrine to log their name, address, the date and time they purchase the product and their signature. Allen says Troy George's name appeared repeatedly on the logs.
When interviewed by police, George admitted he was selling the cold medication to people who were making meth.
Allen say people like George buy the cold medication and then sell it for between $25 to $50 a box or trade it for meth.
Allen added that the making of meth and the distribution of the drug is becoming a big problem in the county.
"Doing what Troy George does, keeps the makers of the meth off the logs so police can't track them," Allen says. "The making of meth and distribution of the product is becoming a real problem in the county. We need to send a message that this is not going to be tolerated. And arresting people like Troy George sends that message."
