(MITCHELL) - With the aim of helping more students graduate, Mitchell educators are setting their sights on opening the Apollo Center alternative school.
While details of the project are still being worked out, the school board gave their approval. Mitchell High School received an F when the state handed out grades last year.
About 30% of that grade comes from the school's graduation rate. Mitchell's graduation rate is around 70%, well below the state average of 85.7%.
The Apollo Center would offer education methods, like on-line classes, twice a day. Existing staff members would oversee the classes.
The three hours of help would serve as many as 15 students in each session. Juniors and seniors who are not successful in the traditional school setting and are at risk of not graduating would be eligible for the program. The coursework would be tailored to the student's needs and students would have to earn credits through internships like paid employment and community service in order to graduate.
The state must approve the alternative school plan.
