(MEDORA) - David Garrison of Medora was always interested in athletics and that interest led him to look into rodeo and soon he was training bulls and cows for rodeos.
After high school and college he started a rodeo training business with his father Jim.
In 2008 they took a trip to Ohio to purchase their first cow and calf. Since their purchase, the herd has grown to sixteen, and David expects the herd to grow to about 20 by the end of March.
Training bulls and cows involves showing them how to run through pins to get to their destination, not moving before gates open, and how to get back into pins once the ride is over.
David says it is a process that takes time and repetition. Potential danger comes when the cattle get in the pins get defensive.
The ultimate goal is to get the best bloodline and sell the animals to Professional Bull Riders (PBR), the Professional Rodeo League.
Now the Garrisons take their cattle to amateur rodeos, that scouts for the PBR come to view potential purchases - hoping they will get noticed. The men plan to continue training, maintaining a bloodline, and taking their steers to amateur rodeos to try to sell and keep their training going.
