Linton-Stockton Students Allowed To Use Cell Phones

Last updated on Wednesday, February 22, 2012

(LINTON) - Linton-Stockton schools students will be allowed to use their phones and other electronic devices in limited ways on campus during March. (GC DAILY WORLD)

The Linton-Stockton Board of School Trustees approved the policy change Monday.

Currently the school has a policy that bans all electronic devises and states a student caught with a device could be suspended or placed in alternative school program.

The new policy is an experiment to see how well students can responsibly use devices such as cell phones and personal data assistants at the schools.

Beginning March 1 will last a month and then be reviewed by the trustees and determined if the policy will become permanent

The policy can be revoked at any time if school principals find the devices are being abused. A report on how the policy is progressing will be given to the trustees on March 19th.

The change comes in response to discussions begun last October by the school corporation's Technology Committee which seek to address increasing student reliance upon the technology.

Students can use the devices before and after school and during study halls and lunch. During class, teachers will ask students to turn the devices off unless the teacher feels it would benefit classwork. Also, the devices cannot infringe on the school's limited Wi-Fi capacity, which is presently incapable of handling all students using their devices at once.

Likewise, use of the devices for course work cannot use up students' own data plans.

If the devices are abused during class time the students could face detention until 5 p.m. and elementary students would lose recess time. The students will also lose the device, until a parent comes to speak with the student's principal. Devices cannot be used in any way which would violate state statutes.
