Bloomington Elementary School Principal Accused Of Battering 10-Year-Old

Last updated on Wednesday, February 29, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - Police are investigating allegations of a physical altercation between a Monroe County elementary school principal and a 10-year-old student.

Binford Elementary School principal Joe Childers has been placed on paid administrative leave following the incident that happened last Thursday.

Few other details were released. Police say the child was examined by a doctor, but was not hospitalized.

Monroe County Community School Corporation Superintendent Judy DeMuth sent an email to Binford Elementary parents about the situation.

"This past Thursday, at the end of the school day, an unfortunate situation occurred involving a student and Principal Childers," the email read. "Please know that Mr. Childers is not at work at this time until the entire matter is thoroughly investigated."

Parents and students have came to Childers defense, saying they don't believe the allegations and he couldn't possibly hurt a child.

Childers has been with the district for eight years, and school officials said this is the first time his conduct has been investigated.

As of this morning no criminal charges have been filed.
