(BLOOMFIELD) - Bloomfield’s 97.2 percent graduation rate for 2011 ranked them number 6 in the state for non-waiver schools.
All five Greene County high schools topped the state average graduation rate for 2011. But one - Bloomfield - shined among the best of the state.
The rates were released this week by the Indiana Department of Education. The state average graduation rate for non-waiver schools was 78.9 percent.
State superintendent of public instruction Tony Bennet will visit Bloomfield on Feb. 21 from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. to recognize the school for its efforts.
The lowest graduation rate in the past six years at Bloomfield was 88 percent. The 2010 rate was 97 and the 2009 rate was 93 percent.
Some students have taken advantage of making up course work at the Turning Point Education Center near the 4-H Fairgrounds and the Greene Academy, an alternative to suspension program on the east side of the White River Valley campus.
All county students can go to Turning Point and make up credits. The Greene Academy is another key factor.
When students were suspended from school before, they were not able to make up their credits. When Judge Erik Allen became judge, he started the out-of-school suspension program for county schools - Greene Academy.
Now students suspended are in a supervised location the entire day and complete assignments and get credit for them.
Another factor is the Knoy Learning Center Grant. The grant is used for a credit-recovery program. The school used the grant to hire someone to help students who need to make up credits. Students can come in after school and take the classes they need to graduate.
