Republican Party Chairman Soliciting Names For Mitchell Council Seat

Last updated on Monday, January 2, 2012

(MITCHELL) Lawrence County Republican Party Chairman Sam Bond is soliciting names of individuals who live in District 2 and are interested in serving on Mitchell’s City Council.

Bond is responsible for replacing longtime Mitchell High School teacher and Mitchell City Councilman-elect 62-year-old Gerald Tolliver, who died Thursday at his residence.

Tolliver, a 1967 graduate of Mitchell High School, began his teaching career in Mitchell in 1973, and he continued until 2010 when he retired because of health issues.

He filed for the District 2 seat on the Mitchell City Council earlier this year, won his party's nomination in the primary and was elected in November, when he was unopposed.
He was sworn in on Dec. 16.

Indiana Election Code states that it is not necessary to call a caucus to fill the council seat. Bond said that when only one or two people are serving as precinct committeemen for a district, law does not require a caucus. He said the district has only one precinct committeeman.

Bond has 30 days to fill the position.
