(MITCHELL) - A Republican caucus will determine who will fill the District 2 Mitchell City Council Seat. The seat of Gerald Tolliver will be filled in 30 days. Tolliver died unexpectedly on Dec. 29 at the age of 62.

Six people so far have showed interest in holding the position according to Lawrence County Republican Party Chairman Sam Bond. Previously Bond said no caucus would be held, but after reviewing the election law there will be a caucus. Mitchell is represented by five city council members from four districts with a single at-large seat. However, voters throughout the city cast ballots for all five seats, instead of voting by district for a district representative.

"It's like Mitchell has five at-large seats," Bond said. "It doesn't matter where you live, everyone in the city votes for the districts."

A date hasn't been set for the caucus, which will consist of the four precinct committee persons: Bill Carlisle, Judy Moore, Ilene Hardman and Aimee Carlisle.

Those interested in filling the office need to send a letter of intention 72 hours in advance of the caucus. They will then be recognized at the caucus and given two minutes to address the committee. The committee will then review the person's qualifications and vote on who will best serve the people of Mitchell.

Letters of intent should be mailed to Bond at 5267 Old Ind. 37 North, Springville, IN 47462. Candidates must live within the city's second district and "be in good standing as a Republican." Voting records will be reviewed before the caucus, Bond said.
