(ORLEANS) - Lt. Governor Becky Skillman has awarded the Town of Orleans a $546,000 grant to fund improvements to the town's wastewater treatment and collection system.

The grant is funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, which is administered by the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

The grant will fund the replacement of various wastewater system components to reduce inflow and infiltration from storm water and other water sources, as well as prevent sewage overflows from manholes and lift stations.

The project will also include significant updates to the town's wastewater treatment plant. Completion of these improvements will benefit residents by keeping utility rates affordable and alleviating health and safety concerns related to sewage overflows and backups.

"Adequate wastewater treatment systems protect businesses and residents, and prevent costly repairs and clean up costs which can devastate small communities," said Lt. Governor Skillman. "Making these system improvements now will help Orleans succeed in the future."
