(BLOOMINGTON) - More than 200 people took the Polar Bear Plunge this year, the largest turnout in the event’s eight-year history at Lake Monroe.
Some went underwater, others went waist-deep, and no one stayed in for more than two minutes. They stumbled out, unable to feel their legs, arms or faces move. Still, many said they would do it again next year, and altogether the group donated $551 to the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network.
Sunday morning was a cloudy, 40-degree day with a drizzling rain and some gusting winds. But the getting in is not half as bad as the getting out. In fact it was painful to some as many said it felt like a million needles were pricking their bodies.
An entire shift of Perry Clear Creek firefighters arrived at the lake in a fire engine, wearing shorts of course.
Fire Captain Robert McWhorter plunged in for a couple seconds, and said it may become a station tradition.
