(MITCHELL) - Lawrence County police officers found a large amount of heroin during a search of a Mitchell home.
The Lawrence County Probation Department was making a visit to 43-year-old Troy D. Jones at the home and had reason to believe he might be taking part in illegal drug activity. They were there because Jones is taking part of a Indiana Department of Correction community transition program.
The probation department called Oolitic Police Officer Bill Allen and K9 Shani for assistance.
Allen said Shani found about 12 balloons of heroin in the bedroom and other drug paraphernalia, including several syringes.
Police believe Jones was dealing the drug. He was charged with dealing heroin, maintaining a common nuisance and reckless possession of paraphernalia. 31-year-old Cassandra S. Agan was also at the home and she was charged with visiting a common nuisance.
Allen said cocaine and heroin are problems in the area, just as are prescription drugs and methamphetamine. With heroin, many use syringes to shoot up the drug and that poses an additional threat for officers, because of hepatitis or AIDs.
