(UNDATED) - 50-year-old Allen Willis, of Camby, was formally charged in Greene Superior Court Monday in connection with a head-on traffic accident that left four people seriously injured - including himself.
Willis is charged with three counts of causing serious bodily injury while operating a vehicle with a Schedule I, II or III controlled substance causing serious bodily injury; possession of methamphetamine and possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor.
Superior Court Judge Dena Martin entered a not-guilty plea for Willis and set a pre-trial hearing for 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 27. She also suspended his driving license. The court also appointed public defender Alan Baughman as his legal counsel.
The accident happened at 3:35 p.m. on Oct. 31, on U.S. 231, just south of the Interstate 69 construction site, northwest of Crane Naval Support Activity (NSA) complex.
Willis driving a 1996 Ford F-150 pick-up was north on U.S. 231 and according to police reports crossed the centerline and hit a southbound 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup, driven by 46-year-old Lorita Taylor of Loogootee, head-on.
Police found $4,800 in cash in Willis' truck and other items - five cell phones, a laptop computer, various drug use and dealing paraphernalia, more than 3 grams of meth and 26.7 grams of marijuana in a plastic sandwich bag, and 8 plastic bags that contained a variety of pills.
Willis was initially airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of multiple internal injuries that required surgery Nov. 1.
A passenger in Willis' truck, 40-year-old Stacey Buchanan of Camby, was also taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital and suffered numerous facial injuries.
Taylor suffered a broken arm, leg, heel, kneecap, ribs, vertebrae and a cervical spinal injury. She also had a severed artery on her brain that resulted in a stroke and subsequent paralysis, according to the probable cause affidavit filed by Greene County Sheriff Department Deputy Heath Murray.
Her husband, 44-year-old Greg Taylor, who was a passenger, suffered a broken collarbone, a broken right arm and some broken ribs.
