(UNDATED) - Girl Scouts from 36 troops in Lawrence County have been taking orders for Girl Scout cookies.
On Jan. 30, the cookies arrive for delivery. And on Feb. 4, Scouts will begin selling cookies at cookie booths at local businesses. Those sales will continue through February.
"Essentially, girls learn to run a business," said Becky Mundy, co-service unit leader. Each troop sets a goal and follows a plan to reach that goal. Girls learn about handling money and communicating with others. Girl Scout troops use funds from the cookie activity to fund services projects or pay a trip. Mundy said camping is always a popular activity funded from cookie sales. Troops also like to visit the Big Splash Adventure water park in French Lick.
This year, Scouts sold a new variety of cookie. Savannah Smiles is a crisp lemon wedge cookie, with just the right number of lemon chips. Savannah Smiles are a tribute to the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting, which began in Savannah, Georgia.
Classic favorites will also be offered, including Do-Si-Dos; crisp and crunchy oatmeal cookies with creamy peanut butter filling; Dulce de Leche, a sweet, indulgent cookie with milk caramel chips and stripes; Samoas, a tender vanilla cookie covered with caramel on top and bottom, and then rolled in toasted coconut, and striped with a rich chocolaty coating; Tagalongs, tasty cookies topped with creamy peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating; Thank U Berry Munch, hearty premium cookies featuring cranberries and creamy, white fudge chips; Thin Mints, thin wafer covered cookies with a smooth chocolaty coating, made with natural peppermint; and Trefoils, shortbread cookies.
Cookies are being delivered earlier this year so customers can have them in time for the Super Bowl, being played in Indianapolis. Special booth sales for the big game will take place at Marsh Supermarkets the weekend of Feb. 4.
Cookies cost $3.50 per box.
100 Years of Girl Scouts
On March 12, Girl Scouts will celebrate the 100th year of scouting. In observance of the anniversary, Lawrence County troops have been engaging in service projects.
"All troops, girls and adults, are encouraged to do community service and keep track of their hours," Mundy said.
During Girl Scout Week, Scouts will present a "check" of their hours to city leaders.
