Last updated on Thursday, January 19, 2012

(BEDFORD) - A father and son were arrested after they broke into an apartment and the fought with by-standers trying to stop them.

48-year-old Michael Todd, of 214 Lincoln Avenue, was charged with residential burglary, public intoxication, disorderly conduct and neglect of a dependent.

His 16-year-old son Dylan was charged with residential burglary, public intoxication, disorderly conducting and illegal consumption.

Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says police were called about a burglary in progress at 7:58 p.m. Wednesday, but before police arrived the department received several more calls reporting a fight at the same location.

When police arrived they found a woman fighting with Michael Todd and another man fighting with Dylan.

"The couple attempted to detain the Todds until officers arrived," Parsley says. "Dylan came at them with a broom handle and it became physical."

Officers broke up the fight and detained the Todds.

Police found the father son team had forced their way into an apartment and had thrown items out the back door.

"There was a couple of broken coffee pots, a wooden chair, a key and wallet in the yard," Parsley says. "The renter did know the two, but had no idea why they would do something like this."

Dylan was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center. Michael was taken to St. Vincent Hospital to be evaluated, because of his level of intoxication and then taken to the Lawrence County Jail.
