Families In Path Of I-69 Prepare For Moving Day

Last updated on Monday, January 23, 2012

(SOLSBERRY) - Boxes are being packed near Solsberry, as many residents prepare for moving day.

Homes and businesses in the construction path of I-69 are being bought, but many say the journey hasn't been easy.

Connie Devine says she relates the incident as a grieving process.

The Devine family was first told their house would be purchased seven years ago, and have been getting conflicting answers ever since.

Finally, the government has decided to only pay for part of their property and not include any additions, like their pool, so there is a big dollar discrepancy.

And negotiations for Jane and Mark Adam's business took months... and required stacks of paper work.

They say appraises tell them one story and the I-69 office will tell them something totally different. Mark says it's like a slap in the face.

Both families say the emotional strain of not knowing where they would go, and if they would get the money they needed, was extremely hard.

Both families say it is an emotional strain and you never know what is going to happen until they knock on your door.

As I-69 makes its way from Evansville to Indianapolis, those being displaced say if you want to break even, make sure you're prepared to do the extra work. Talk to others that have been through the process. Document everything. Save every email and letter you receive. Keep in contact with the main office and the relocation agent assigned to the property.

The Devine family has to be out of their house by the end of February. Meanwhile, other families are fighting the government in court.
