Eagle Watch Weekend Returns

Last updated on Thursday, January 19, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - Eagle Watch Weekend returns January 27-29 for its 12th year. This year’s event is dedicated to the memory of artist and longtime Eagle Watcher Bill Zimmerman, who died last November.

The event will once again be held at Eagle Pointe Resort near Lake Monroe, described in a press release as "the bird watching capital of Indiana." Eagle Watch Weekend is sponsored by Bird Country US, Eagle Pointe Golf Resort and the Sassafras Audubon Society.

The weekend will start off with the eighth annual Eagle Watch Weekend bird count, continue in the afternoon with a workshop on the basics of birding and finish up the day with the Owl Prowl.

Jan. 28 will feature outings for birders of all skill levels, tours to view eagles in the wild, and a more advanced presentation on the breeding systems of birds by Indiana University professors Jim and Susan Hengeveld.

That evening will feature a tribute to Zimmerman, an expert birder. Also, there will be a showing of the new movie on the life and land ethic of naturalist Aldo Leopold, known by many as the "Father of Wildlife Conservation," the press release continued.

Jan. 28 will also be the time to stop and see products from Bird Country US, featuring the newest field guides on the market, nest boxes and the CD "Bird Songs of Southern Indiana" by birdsong recordist Geoff Keller, who will be on hand to autograph his CDs. Two artists, Julia Ferguson and Joanne Kelly, will also be on hand that afternoon.

Jan. 29 will feature yet another outing in the morning, a program on "Butterflies of Indiana: Those Other Winged Creatures," and a preview of the upcoming Hill Country Warbler Fest.

Individuals can pre-register online or by mail to attend any or all parts of the 2012 event for the fee of $10 for adults and $4 for youth ages 12 and younger. Walk-ins the weekend of the event are always welcome. Walk-in registration is $12 for adults and $5 for youth 12 and younger.
