(BROWNSTOWN) - The county juvenile home in Brownstown will undergo more than $80,000 dollars in renovations.
The center has generated enough income from the state in recent years to pay for the repairs, according to director Dan Banks.
The 33-year-old home on East Walnut Street serves as a way for troubled youth to avoid being sent to a juvenile center or state facility. It has the capacity to house 10 juveniles.
Over the years the county has accumulated nearly $700,000 dollars in funds to house the juveniles. Banks says the home's board originally intended to use the income from housing male juveniles from the county and surrounding counties to build a second home for females.
At one point both males and female were housed at the home, but that changed in 2000 because it was causing problems. The state however, has started to move away from county owned homes.
The repairs will include a new kitchen, cabinets, doors, windows, roof, new floor covering and a new heating and cooling system. Banks says the board will also ask for funds for painting, new furniture and upgraded security cameras in the future.
