Campbellsburg Woman Accused Of Beating Woman With Club

Last updated on Thursday, January 19, 2012

(CAMPBELLSBURG) - Matlida “Sue” Melloncamp, of Campbellsburg, is accused of beating her 19-year-old foster daughter with a wooden club and threatening her with a gun on Friday.

46-year-old Melloncamp faces at least four criminal charges.

That investigation began when Indiana State Police were called to the emergency room at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour to investigate a report that a woman had been battered.

The foster daughter told troopers she had been struck several times on the head and face with a wooden club, choked and threatened with a handgun during a domestic fight at a Campbellsburg home.

The girl said after washing the dishes and cleaning the bathroom as Mellencamp had asked her to do, she went to her room. She claims Mellencamp came into her room and began yelling at her saying that she doesn't do enough around the house and disrespects her. Mellencamp then allegedly punched the girl in the face.

Mellencamp then began hitting the girl in the head with a stick with an object tied to the end of it. The police found the alleged weapon later in the home.

When Mellencamp's husband came home, the report says she began yelling at both of them and got a gun out of the closet. The trooper wrote that the girl reported Mellencamp saying "she is not afraid to use the gun and that she could get away with it because she is on medication."

En route to the girl's aunt's home in Brownstown, the girl said Mellencamp threatened to kill her if she told anybody anything about what had transpired that evening.

When police interviewed Mellencamp, she admitted to hitting the girl and threatening her life. She said she believed the girl and her husband were having a sexual relationship. Her husband vehemently denied that allegation.

Mellencamp told police when the girl moved into her home four months ago, she established ground rules. One of those was to "not mess with" her husband.

Melloncamp was then arrested.

Melloncamp was taken to the Washington County Jail in Salem and faces Class C felony charges of battery with a deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and intimidation with a deadly weapon as well as a Class D felony charge of strangulation.
