Bloomington Police Investigating Shooting Death

Last updated on Thursday, January 5, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of 29-year-old Scott Melton, of Bloomington.

Police were called to the home just after midnight Thursday.

The caller said a person had been shot at 4900 South Rogers Street. When police arrived they found several people at the home. Melton's body was found inside the house.

Police say there was a fight between Melton and 20-year-old Casey Ratts, of Bloomington. During the fight Melton threatened Ratts with a gun. There was a struggle and Ratts was able to get the gun from Melton. Melton then allegedly got a knife and attempted to stab Ratts. That is when Ratts allegedly shot Melton.

Ratts, along with several other people, were questioned about what happened. Ratts was later released late Wednesday morning.

The case is still under investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted later in the week at the Terre Haute Regional
Hospital at the request of the Monroe County Coroner's Office.
