(MITCHELL) - A woman was killed in a two-car accident at the intersection of Ind. 37 and Ind. 60 in Mitchell.
Mitchell Police Officer J.D. England said the woman was a backseat passenger in a 1998 Mercury four-door sedan. She died Tuesday evening after being taken to an emergency room.
The Mercury was traveling south on Ind. 37. According to witnesses at the scene, the north-south traffic light had changed to red and the car slid through the intersection and was hit by an eastbound 1990 Ford F350 Crew Cab Dually.
The three people in the Dually were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the truck. The driver, a pregnant woman and two children suffered multiple broken bones during the incident.
Officer England reported that all four passengers in the Mercury were wearing seat belts, and that all of the Mercury's air bags deployed. The driver suffered a broken arm and a compound fracture of the right leg. Other passengers complained of chest pain.
Four ambulances responded to the scene. Two air ambulances were called, but crews from both declined to fly because of adverse weather conditions.
Emergency crews assisting at scene were Orange County and the Marion Township fire departments firefighters and an off-duty police officer from the Louisville Metro Area Police Department.
No accident report was available this morning.
Police are also investigating a second accident that happened at 6:34 p.m. on Ind. 37 between the Arby's and McDonald's restaurants. No report was available on that accident.
