Washington County Food Bank Serving Record Numbers

Last updated on Friday, December 23, 2011

(WASHINGTON) - The number of families coming to the Washington County Food Bank for emergency food help started rising several years ago and it has only continued to increase.

Thankfully the community's generosity has grown with the need.

November was another record-setting month with 508 families; 69 of them were new.

Food Bank Treasurer Saralee Shields said that just a few years ago that the food bank served under 100 families a month.

Those families who come to the food bank may do so only once a month and they are given a three-day supply of food.

West Washington Schools delivered more than 800 canned goods Wednesday and Bradie Shrum Elementary brought 2,600 items earlier in the week. Local schools also brought unused perishable items to the food bank so they would be used, instead of wasted, over Christmas break. Those items include extra milk and 10 cases of citrus.

Shields noted many businesses support the food bank, adding JayC Food Store recently donated $2,000.

The food bank is located at 102 E. Poplar St. and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The phone number is 883-2655.
