(BLOOMINGTON) -Three people were jailed on Christmas after police discovered a local meth lab.

A Bloomington police officer stopped to question two men at Dunn and 19th streets about 9:30 p.m. The men were standing near a red pickup truck and claimed to be scavenging for aluminum cans.

Police said the men were acting suspiciously. When police searched the truck they found a bag containing a white powder which they believed was meth. Police also found a marijuana cigarette and a knife inside the pants' pocket of 38-year-old Matthew Oakley. When officers asked for permission to search the man's home, he consented. There they found an active methamphetamine lab in the basement.

Oakley's wife, 34-year-old Amy Jo Smith, also was arrested. An 11-year-old girl living at the house was taken from the home and released to the custody of her grandmother. Police say the girl complained of the strong ammonia-like smell from the meth-making operation.

Oakley was charged with dealing methamphetamine, possession of meth precursors, maintaining a common nuisance and neglect of a dependent. Smith was charged with possession of meth, possession of precursors, neglect of a dependent and maintaining a common nuisance.

The man arrested alongside Oakley, 24-year-old Brandon R. Harden, was charged with possession of methamphetamine.
