(MITCHELL) - Rex Knight of the Southern Indiana Development Commission presented the idea of space history and education museum to a group of Lawrence County leaders.

That idea formed The Lawrence County space Board Inc. The board is comprised of Knight, Dave Branneman, Steve Grissom, Larry Root, Muggs Murphy, Reggie Joslin and Kay Collins.

The group is determined to establish a world class space and science complex, creating a spaced-themed educational forum. Lawrence County is home to astronauts Virgil Grissom, Charles Walker and Kenny Bowersox.

The new Indiana Space Complex would be home to a 30,000-40,000 square foot structure housing a museum, learning center, theater, and Indiana's Space Hall of Fame.

In recent months the board has:

* Hired a nonprofit organizational accountant for filing paperwork for 501(c)(3) certification. Submission is due this month.

* Established an interim fiscal agency agreement with the Lawrence County Tourism Commission, allowing for funding and expenditures.

* Hired a web designer to create a website for public outreach. The website will be launched in early 2012.

* Met with state officials, astronauts and family members, and representatives of the Indiana Space Grant Consortium.

The group has also found two possible sites for the space center. Both are between Bedford and Mitchell.

The goal now is to get the word out to show potential investors the county and region are behind the project and how the community can benefit, Knight said.
