Pruett To Make Changes To The Mitchell Police Department

Last updated on Wednesday, December 28, 2011

(MITCHELL) - Mitchell’s new mayor, Gary Pruett is getting ready to take office the first of the year.

Pruett is not saying what his plans are for the city, but he did say he will do what is "best for people of Mitchell."

The Mitchell Police Department will be his top concern. Pruett said he will take a new direction in the leadership of the department, but wouldn't reveal who the chief will be. Residents will learn that news before the first council meeting.

Political positions; which typically include appointed department heads and confidential slots, such as the mayor's assistant; can be changed when a new administration comes into office. Pruett doesn't plan to make those changes immediately, outside of the police chief.

Pruett left his job at AuthorHouse on Dec. 2, and has been training for his role as mayor. He's attended a variety of training courses through the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns, including "mayor's school." He's also been meeting with outgoing mayor Dan Terrell to learn the ins and outs of the office.

Another plan is to have council members more available to the public. Pruett said not everyone wants to address concerns in a public meeting.

Pruett believes residents need to utilize the council more. He added there has been too much controversy in the public city council meetings and he is hoping that with council members being more available to the public some of that will stop.
