(BLOOMINGTON) - 28-year-old professional golfer Jeff Overton initially said he would contest charges of drunken and disorderly conduct lodged against him in Bloomington.
At the time of his arrest, Overton and his attorney said they would fight the charges because his rights were violated. Then, a week later, he pleaded guilty.
Overton, who lives in Evansville and is ranked 74th in the world, entered into a plea deal last week. Preliminary charges of public intoxication and resisting law enforcement were dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct.
Monroe Circuit Judge Teresa Harper ordered him to complete 30 hours of community service work and made him pay $165 in court costs.
Police arrested Overton on Dec. 10, saying he was intoxicated and was yelling at passers-by from the passenger seat of a limousine in front of Kilroy's Sports Bar. He was yelling because the people were blocking traffic. After being confronted by police, he refused to cooperate and was handcuffed and taken to the Monroe County Jail.
He spent nine hours at the jail and was released after posting $1,500 bond. A few hours later, Overton was on the court at Assembly Hall during halftime of the Indiana-Kentucky basketball game, presenting a $50,000 check to support the Play Golf America University program.
Overton says he will fight the charges because he and his attorney said his rights were violated.
In 2007, Overton was charged with public intoxication; it was dismissed after he entered into a pretrial diversion agreement.
Two other charges of illegal consumption of alcohol, in October 2001 and June 2003, were also dismissed after Overton completed the county's pretrial diversion program and paid hundreds of dollars in fines.
Overton has earned more than $8 million since turning professional in 2005.
