Last updated on Thursday, December 1, 2011

(BEDFORD) - Susan Miller, director of the Bedford Public Library for the past 30 years, was recently honored by the Indiana Library Federation as Outstanding Librarian for 2011.

According to a press release from BPL, "Miller has built vibrant relationships with local organizations to advance the cause of the library and worked with library staff members to develop high standards for themselves and for library service."

Programs she has developed include a satellite library at Needmore Elementary School.

"Her fiscal management style and ability to 'think outside the box' has allowed the Bedford library system to serve hundreds, if not thousands, more people in the district. She also proposed and facilitated new programs to assist residents who were facing high rates of unemployment and several local elected officials praised her leadership and fiscal responsibility within the community," read the release.

"The ILF has benefitted greatly from Ms. Miller's long-term membership where she has provided leadership and served as legislative network liaison in her district for 20 years," said Susan Akers, executive director of the library federation.

The Indiana Library Federation is a membership-driven, nonprofit organization that fosters the professional growth of its members and promotes libraries of all types in the state.
