(LINTON) - Linton-Stockton Elementary School collected 4,751 pounds of food for Linton Community Food Pantry.
It's the most food brought into the food pantry at one time, according to Mike Roth, co-pastor of the Saron United Church of Christ.
The collection at the school started when Stacee Glenn, of the Parent Teacher Organization came up with the idea of a simple week-long competition, Nov. 12-21.
Students were rewarded by receiving a popcorn party if their class brought in the most items or if their items weighted the most on a given day. The top prize was a pizza party.
That was awarded to the class that brought in the most poundage for the week. Mary Ann Witty's fifth grade class took the award. The class collected 629 pounds of food.
Similar food drives held in Linton-Stockton's junior high and high school are expected to bring in another 400 pounds of food.
The community food pantry, housed at 440 E. St. NE just north of St. Peter's Catholic Church, provides food for residents of the 47441 zip code.
