Fire At Salem Downtown Building Under Investigation

Last updated on Monday, December 12, 2011

(SALEM) - A blaze that destroyed an unoccupied downtown Salem building remains under investigation and officials are releasing few details at this time.

The fire was reported via cell phone at 5:19 Wednesday evening at the building located in the 200 block of West Market Street, just north of the bridge and behind Armstrong Hardware.

Fire Chief Roger Pennington said the building is owned by Sam and Jason Temple and was used to store materials related to their construction business.

Pennington said there were no utilities connected to the building and said it had been unoccupied for a long time.

When firefighters arrived heavy fire was showing from the northside of the metal roof. Pennington said it took an hour and a half to bring the blaze under control.

Brown-Vernon VFD provided mutual assistance with air tanks and manpower and Pierce-Polk and Posey VFDs also sent firefighters to assist at the scene.

Firefighters drew from several nearby hydrants and used the aerial truck to apply water to the burning building. Firefighters remained on the scene several hours.
