Crane Engineer Receives Award

Last updated on Friday, December 30, 2011

(CRANE) - Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) engineer, William G. Conley, received the Department of Defense (DoD) Outstanding Employee with a Disability Award at a Dec. 6 ceremony in Bethesda, MD.

This annual event provides an overview of DoD disability policy and initiatives, recognizes DoD organizations with outstanding affirmative action programs for people with disabilities, and highlights the accomplishments of DoD employees with disabilities.
Conley, of Bloomington, was the only Department of the Navy employee among the group of 19 honorees.

The DoD recognized Conley for his efforts on the exploitation and defeat of radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIEDs), responsible for the deaths of many Warfighters in theater.

Specifically, Conley was instrumental in the development of a new sensing probe measuring system, which could be imbedded into the electronic circuitry of threat devices like those encountered by our troops. Because of his work, government test engineers have the ability to more accurately measure the effectiveness of U.S. and coalition systems against RCIED threats.

"We are extremely proud of Dr. Conley. We value our diverse workforce and he represents the best of the best. His work is critical to today's Warfighter mission and equally important to future technology for our national security," said NSWC Crane Commanding Officer, Col. Alan M. Pratt.

Conley joined the Expeditionary Electronic Warfare Systems Division's Threat Evaluation and Exploitation team at NSWC Crane in 2009 following completion of his Ph.D. at Purdue University. He has successfully developed collaborations with coalition partners and was instrumental in the stand-up of an innovation cell at NSWC Crane specializing in expeditionary electronic warfare. He has also helped establish partnerships with other DoD agencies and is currently pursuing new and innovative ways to understand and solve critical problems within the EW community.

NSWC Crane is a Naval laboratory and a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) with focus areas in Special Mission, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare/Information Operations. The Warfare Center's research and development efforts support the Warfighter by providing capabilities and resources to advance technologies for the military.
