Brownstown K-9 Needs Recertified

Last updated on Monday, December 12, 2011

(BROWNSTOWN) - Brownstown K-9 Officer John Reichenbacker needs his canine partner re-certified.

The dog must be re-certified once a year. This should have been done in September, but it didn't happen because of a shortage in manpower and overtime issues after officer John Long left the force to take the job of director of the county Juvenile Detention Center.

Without the certification, the dog could not be used in drug investigations, but could still be used to track people.

Town Marshal Steve Scarlett is trying to get the officer into a program to certify the dog and handler. The soonest that could take place is March, but they are trying to find an earlier date.

Council members voted last week to leave the dog in place despite the lack of certification.
