Bedford Truck Driver Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize

Last updated on Thursday, December 22, 2011

(BEDFORD) - Bedford resident Tim Armitage didn’t realize he had won the Powerball until his dispatcher at Cap Trucking told him Monday that he may hold the winning ticket.

Armitage claimed his prize Wednesday afternoon.

Armitage matched all five numbers in Saturday's Powerball drawing. He was one of eight winners that night across the country. The only difference is that Armitage paid the extra dollar to make it a Powerplay. That dollar added another $800,000 to the prize.

Armitage bought his winning ticket this past Saturday at D&D Star Stop on U.S. 50 East on his way home from work.

Hoosier Lottery Official Al Larsen meet with Armitage and store owners Doug Brinkman and Dave Brooks to take pictures and hand over the check.

Brinkman and Brooks, who have owned D&D Star Stop for three years will receive $10,000 for selling the winning ticket.

44-year-old Armitage is an Ohio native who moved to Bedford, from Bristol, VA less than a year ago in search of a job.

Armitage plans to keep on working. He plans to invest his winnings and maybe take a nice vacation with his family. He is also thinking about buying himself a new Ford truck for Christmas. And in the spirit of the holidays he plans to help his family.

After taxes, his lump sum payment is about $700,000.

Armitage is the latest in a string of Hoosier Lottery winners in Bedford. On May 13, Tim Holle, of Bedford, won $1 million on a Mega Millions with Megaplier ticket he purchased at Circle K on 16th Street. On November 15, James Atkinson, of Bedford, won $120,000 on a Hoosier Lottery Scratch-off he purchased at Speedway on U.S. 50.

The Hoosier Lottery reminds all players to play responsibly and to always sign the back of their tickets.
