Angel Paintings Found In Dome On Display

Last updated on Friday, December 30, 2011

(WEST BADEN SPRINGS) - An upcoming art exhibit will showcase images of seven larger-than-life angels painted perhaps a century ago within the 100-foot-high dome of a southern Indiana hotel.

Photographic artist Pamela Mougin took pictures of the out-of-view paintings in 2005 and 2006 during the renovation of the West Baden Springs Hotel. Her replications of the angels will be displayed Friday through Sunday at an antiques store in the town.

Mougin said she believes Italian workers installing mosaic tile painted the angels during the hotel's early 1900s construction. She says the painters weren't trained artists as the angels' eyes are askew and their hands somewhat deformed.

Some of her images include graffiti that was scrawled onto the angels during the years the hotel sat empty.
