Last updated on Thursday, December 8, 2011

(BEDFORD) - A 14-year-old Bedford girl was arrested after she stole her mother’s car and drove to Shoals.

Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley said the teen and her 12-year-old brother stayed home from school Wednesday because they were sick.

Their mother woke up around noon and discovered the children were gone and so was her 1993 Oldsmobile.

"That's when mom began texting the children to find out were they were," Parsley said. "She had discovered they picked up a couple of friends and were in Shoals."

Police in Martin County were contacted and spotted the vehicle, with the 14-year-old, the 12-years-old and a 16-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl inside the car.

Martin County police said the children had been drinking.

The 14-year-old girl was charged with auto theft and public intoxication. She was taken to the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.

The 16-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl were charged with public intoxication. They were transported to the Bedford Police Station and released to their parents.

The 12-year-old boy was not charged and his father picked him up at the police station in Shoals.
