(GREENE COUNTY) - Greene County Police are looking for the final resting spot of a tombstone that was turned into the sheriff’s department Saturday.
The tombstone was found lying on the side of a county road between Solsberry and Newark, according to Greene County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Major Mike Hasler.
The small stone that appears to have been broken off a few inches above the dirt/grass line, bears the name of a small child - Joel E. Moulden the son of E & E Moulden. He was born Nov. 9, 1875 and died Nov. 20, 1879.
Hasler conducted some research online Monday night and was able to locate 1880 U.S. Census information that showed a 4-year-old boy named Eli J. Moulden was born in 1875 in Richland Township of Greene County. His parents were Edward and Elizabeth Moulden.
There were three siblings - Jeremiah, 10; John, 8; and Charles, 3. Interestingly, Hasler determined that the 1880 Census started in June 1879 -- which would have been five months before the youngster died.
That's all the information Hasler as been able to find online.
The Greene County Historical Society has turned up no information on where the tombstone was formerly located.
Hasler asked that anyone with cemetery records or knowledge of this family or this young boy to contact the sheriff's department at 384-4411.
