(WASHINGTON) - Washington boys basketball coach Gene Miiller has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
He has coached seven seasons at Washington High School with three state championship.
Miiller was elated with the news and surprised he was nominated while still coaching.
Miiller won a pair of sectionals, before winning the 2008 state championship. He then added another sectional in 2009, before posting two 3A championships in 2010 and 2011.
Miiller is now the 13th former Hatchet coach or player now in the Hall of Fame.
Miiller currently has 598 career victories, having also taken Vincennes Lincoln to the 1984 state finals, while also coaching at Kankakee Valley and Lafayette Jefferson.
He has amassed 28 sectional titles during his career. He was graduated from South Newton in 1971 and then moved on to play at Wabash College. Miiller has been coaching for 36 years.
The induction banquet will be Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in Indianapolis.
Another selectee with strong ties to Washington is Elmer Oliphant, formerly of Linton, a centennial award winner.
Oliphant was a star member of the Hatchets undefeated 1908 football team and was member of the final WHS basketball team before play was suspended and restarted again 1913.
Players become eligible for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame induction 26 years after he/she has played high school basketball.
Coaches are eligible after accumulating 25 years of varsity experience or 10 years after retirement from high school coaching.
While anyone can nominate an individual to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, a state-wide board of directors (composed of coaches, journalists, administrators and businessmen) oversees the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame selection process, each year appointing a selection committee representing all parts of the state.
