(SALEM) - Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in a serious crash that sent two people to University of Louisville Hospital by helicopter.
43-year-old Bridget L. Sands, of Salem, was flown from the scene with serious head and back injuries.
Sands was thrown from the 1989 Ford Ranger in which she was a passenger. She is listed in critical condition.
24-year-old Jesse A. Wells, of Salem, was transported from the scene by the Washington County Ambulance Service, to St. Vincent Salem Hospital and then flown to U of L.
Wells, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Neon which struck the Ranger, she is listed in stable condition.
38-year-old Johnathan W. Jackson, of Salem, was the other person involved in the crash. He was the driver of the Ford Ranger. He was not injured.
Washington County Sheriff's Department police say the crash was reported at 12:36 a.m. Sunday at State Road 60 West and Abbott Lane.
Police first discovered the Ranger which was crashed in a field about 100 feet north of SR 60. The Neon was found about 50 feet south of the highway in the front yard of a residence.
Police say Jackson was eastbound when Wells, who was northbound on Abbott Lane, disregarded the stop sign and collided with the bed of Jackson's pickup. That caused the Ranger to spin 180 degrees and slide off the roadway. The truck overturned, ejecting Sands. The Well's Neon continued west, striking two mailboxes and breaking a telephone pole. The incident remains under investigation.
