(MITCHELL) - Mitchell Postmaster Diane Hankins says scammers are using the United States Postal Service to target victims.
Customers will receive bogus emails with the subject line "USPS Delivery Failure Notice." The emails claim to be from the postal service and contain fraudulent information about an attempted or intercepted package delivery.
The emails instruct customers to click on a link to find out when they can expect delivery. Clicking on the link activates a virus which can steal personal information stored in the computer.
Customers are advised to delete the message and take no further action, unless they choose to report the email as span by sending an email to abuse@usps.gov.
Another USPS scam uses telemarketing techniques by telephoning residents and requesting birth dates and Social Security numbers as requirements for package delivery.
If you receive a call or an email tells you that you the USPS is trying to deliver a package to you, but cannot, and requests personal information, call (800) ASK-USPS to make confirmation before providing any information. You can also contact the local post office for more information.
