Paoli Square Being Renovated

Last updated on Monday, November 14, 2011

(PAOLI) - The Paoli downtown square is being renovated following a fire that leveled the southwest quadrant a year ago Sunday.

Hoosier Uplands Community Action Agency has acquired the site and is replacing the burned buildings with a building that will feature offices and commercials space at ground level and apartments on the upper floor.

The project is called Phoenix on the Square. Among the buildings destroyed where the Orange County Bank, 12 apartments and Jackson Hewitt Tax Service and the Indiana Department of Child Services. No one was injured and no cause was ever determined.

The Paoli Chamber of Commerce will occupy part of the new building. The demolition part is out for bids and those bids are due this Wednesday. The clean up will begin following an approval of one of the bids.

A $2 million state grant and local foundation money will help pay for the rebuilding and renovation. Construction should begin in December, according to Hoosier Uplands Chief Executive Officer David Miller. He estimates the new building will be finished by September or October of 2012.
