(LINTON) - 28-year-old Andy Dyers, of Indianapolis, and 48-year-old Joe Whitehead, of Linton, were arrested after illegally hunting bobcat in Greene County on Nov. 13.

Both are facing a Class C misdemeanor for illegal harvest of a protected furbearer.

Conservation officers were called when a landowner reported a man trespassing on his property in southwestern Greene County. The landowner, who thought that the trespassors were deer hunting, asked the men to leave.

Dyers told the man he had shot a mountain lion. When police arrived they found evidence that a bobcat had been killed and taken from the property.

Officers found a female bobcat ditched in a nearby roadway.

Bobcats are considered a protected furbearing mammal under state law. While bobcat numbers have been increasing in recent years, bobcats are still considered to be protected by the state.
