JR Holmes Inducted Into Indiana Basketball Hall Of Fame

Last updated on Wednesday, November 30, 2011

(BLOOMINGTON) - J.R. Holmes, athletic director and coach at Bloomington High School South, will be inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Holmes has coached for 42 years. 30 of those years have been at South, where he has chalked up 512 victories against 172 losses. His teams won state titles in 2009 and 2011. His 2010 team was undefeated in the regular season but lost in the tournament.

"I guess it's a long way from Goose Creek in Avoca to getting to the Hall of Fame, and it's always a nice thing to get and something to cherish, but I want everybody to know that I realize it's not just me who made it possible," said the 1965 Needmore High graduate. "There are a lot of others involved. You need supportive parents who make it possible for you to play basketball and attend college when there were a lot of kids who had to work at that time in their lives. My parents (Harvey "Cocky" and Marian Holmes) made that possible."

Holmes continues, saying, "then you have to have great players, great assistant coaches, great administrations, and a great family with a wife and kids who understand basketball and all the time that goes into it. I've had a lot of great people around me all these years."
