Hunter Injured After Falling From Tree Stand

61-year-old John Elkins was injured after falling 17 feet from a deer stand.

Indiana Conservation officers reported Friday morning that Elkins was attempting to step onto a deer stand fixed to a tree when the platform gave way.

Elkins suffered injuries to his face, shoulder and back. He was wearing a safety harness, but had not yet attached it to the tree.

Elkins was able to walk nearly 400 yards before his hunting partners located he. He was taken from the area on an ATV and then by ambulance to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.
