(BLOOMFIELD) - The Greene County Highway Department will be shut down this week in a move that is aimed at saving fuel dollars.

Highway Superintendent Brent Murray says this is the second year the Thanksgiving holiday week will be on mandatory shutdown.

Today through Wednesday, workers will use either accumulated comp time or vacation days, to cover the time off. Murray says the shutdown will probably save between $1,500 and $2,000 in fuel costs.

Normally, the highway department has 11 trucks, three graders, a couple of ditching excavating machines and several tractors on the road every day.

Murray and three road supervisors will be on-call this week for road emergencies.
