Crawfordsville Church Destroyed In Blaze

Last updated on Monday, November 14, 2011

(CRAWFORDSVILLE) - Firefighters from five Montgomery County fire departments were called to the scene of a fire at the Yountsville Christian Church four miles west of Crawfordsville Sunday morning.

Witnesses say worship service was about to begin just before 11 a.m. when someone noticed smoke in the building. The building was evacuated and 911 was called.

Crawfordsville Fire Department Inspector Mark Evans say the first firefighters arrived on the scene to find the building fully involved in fire and flames shooting out the roof. 20-mile-per-hour winds helped fuel the inferno.

There are no hydrants in the part of Montgomery County where the church stands, so tanker trucks were called in to help fight the fire.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries during the blaze. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

The church, which dates back to 1842, was destroyed. Firefighters don't have an official cause of the fire, but believe it may have been electrical.
