(BLOOMINGTON)- New homes are being sought for pieces of the copper dome that topped a southern Indiana courthouse for a century.

The sheets of green-painted copper and decorative sections of the dome's base were removed five years from atop the Monroe County Courthouse in downtown Bloomington. They're being stored in a county highway department barn and will be part of the county's surplus auction on Nov. 19.

County commissioner Mark Stoops tells The Herald-Times that he hopes a nonprofit group, an antique lover or an architect will buy the pieces so they don't end up being melted down for scrap.

Stoops says the tar and waterproofing paint used on the copper over the years to stop roof leaks have discouraged possible buyers.
