(UNDATED) - The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announced Thursday Crider & Crider, Inc. of Bloomington as the low bidder for the first segment in I-69 Section 4 in Greene and Monroe counties.
The winning bid of $26,883,500 was 20 percent below the engineer's estimate. This contract is the beginning of construction in Section 4 and begins just east of the new U.S. 231 and I-69 interchange and stretches to Taylor Ridge Road.
This 4.6 mile contract will include construction of a four-lane interstate highway.
Section 4 which connects with the existing four-lane State Road 37 on the south side of Bloomington, is scheduled to open to traffic by the end of 2014, according to INDOT spokesperson Cher Elliott, of the Vincennes district office.
In May of 2010, Governor Mitch Daniels announced that funding for Section 4 of the corridor had been secured and design and construction schedules had been accelerated.
Thirteen of the 17 road and bridge construction contracts that have been let in Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 have been awarded to Indiana firms as the lowest bids.
INDOT anticipates that work will begin after the first of the year and include relocation of utilities, completion of final design plans and staking and clearing the right-of-way.
The 142-mile I-69 corridor from Evansville to Indianapolis was divided into six independent sections with the December 2003 Tier 1 Final Environmental Impact Study and was approved by the Federal Highway Administration in March 2004.
Sixty five miles of Sections 1, 2 and 3 are currently under construction and scheduled to open at the end of 2012.
In September, FHWA approved the 27 mile route of Section 4 between Crane and Bloomington, according to Elliott.
