Bedford Man Faces Jury After Shooting At Police

Last updated on Thursday, November 10, 2011

(BEDFORD) - Jury selection begins this morning in Lawrence County Superior Court II in the trial of Kenneth Tipton. Tipton is charged with attempted murder.

He is accused of firing a long rifle at police when they responded to a domestic fight at a home in the 2400 block of J Street on August 16, 2009.

Tipton injured Bedford Police Officer Justin Dodd after a piece of the round hit him in the face. Tipton is accused of firing several shots that damaged a police cruiser and neighbors homes, breaking windows, puncturing siding and sending pellets into the homes.

During telephone negotiations, Tipton told police he had 25 to 30 guns, a gas mask and a bullet proof vest and a lot of ammo. Tipton finally surrendered and was arrested.

Police searched Tipton's home and found numerous guns, pistols and knives, a flight jacket and bins filled with bullets, shotgun shells and other ammunition. Police also found a marijuana grow operation in the garage.
