Woman Admits Stealing Money From Cemetery Fund

Last updated on Thursday, October 13, 2011

(SALEM) - Stephanie Atkins was sentenced to four years, with two years suspended after she pleaded guilty stealing funds from the Beech Grove Cemetery Association in Washington County according to Washington County Prosecutor Dustin Houchin.

Atkins will serve two years and the judge allowed her to have work release in Clark County.
The investigation revealed that from December of 2005 up until March of 2010, Atkins, who was in charge of the association's finances, allegedly wrote checks on the cemetery association for more than $25,000 for her own personal gain.

During this same time period Atkins had allegedly provided financial reports to the Beech Grove Cemetery Association that were false, showing more money in the bank account than was actually there.

During that time Atkins also ran the Washington County Christmas Assistance Program. Houchin said after looking into that fund, he doesn't suspect any wrong doing.
