Washington Man Enters Plea On Rape Charges

(WASHINGTON) - Daviess County Superior Court Judge Dean Sobecki has taken a plea agreement under advisement.

The agreement would allow Reichard Sanden, to plead guilty to one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class C felony.

Sanden was arrested Jan. 8, at the apartment of Rebecca Whitehead, at 900 S. Meridian Street. Whitehead died at the residence.

Sanden was charged with seven counts of rape, three counts of criminal deviate conduct, abuse of a corpse, possession of marijuana and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

According to the plea agreement, the battery charge comes from Sanden biting the victim, breaking the skin. Under the agreement, the other charges would be dropped and Sanden would be sentenced to the maximum of eight years.The agreement included the suspension of six years, with six years of probation.

According to court documents, city police were called to Whitehead's apartment at 9:33 p.m. Police say Whitehead died around 8 p.m.

Sanden told police he was staying with Whitehead, whom he met on a telephone dateline. He said the two were having sex until he noticed she was not breathing and called an ambulance. He also began CPR.

He told police that the two had been drinking and smoking marijuana. Sanden taped the sexual encounter.

During a search of the apartment, officers found a video camera that was used to record the incident.

According to the plea agreement, the battery charge comes from Sanden biting the victim, breaking the skin.

The probation department will be making a report for the court to help the judge determine if he will accept the plea agreement.

A sentencing is set for 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9.
