(BLOOMINGTON) - 19-year-old Indiana University freshman Renee Ohrn died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning according to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy was performed Monday.
Firefighters found Ohrn next to a sliding glass door on the third floor outside of apartment D9 at Terra Trace Apartments. The coroner's autopsy report also states finding alcohol in Ohrn's system.
Bloomington Fire Chief Roger Kerr says the blaze started in apartment D8 but, says the amount of damage caused by the three-alarm fire will slow the investigative process for finding what caused the fire.
Firefighters were called to the complex at 3:37 a.m. Saturday. The first units to arrive on the scene were met with towering flames and immediately called for more manpower. Just minutes later a fire commander called for even more backup crews.
The blaze left Ohrn dead, several injured and destroyed 12 apartments.
Representatives from the Terra Trace apartments, along with the Monroe County Apartment Association are working to find housing for the residents displaced in the blaze.
An assistance fund has been set up for the residents. Anyone who wishes to donate to the fund may do so at any German American Bancorp location.
